What is the story behind the Biblio-mat?

I went fishing this past summer with Craig Small, co-founder of The Juggernaut, an animation studio in Toronto. I had this idea that I would love to have a vending machine that gave out random books. I pictured it as a painted refrigerator box with one of my assistants inside; people would put in a coin and he would drop a book out. But Craig is more pragmatic and visionary then I am. He said, “You need to have an actual mechanical vending machine.” That was beyond my wildest imaginings, but not Craig’s, so he just built it for me.

…

What books are stocked in the Biblio-mat?The books in the machine are two dollars each — that’s not enough to make any profit, but the nature of the second-hand book business is that I end up with a lot of books that are interesting and worth keeping and disseminating, but have no practical retail value. Historically in the used books trade there has always been the dollar cart in front of the store. This is just a spin on that.

A random used-book vending machine. I think I am in love.

therumpus:

“Luckily, Ware’s cleverness has universal appeal. Whether you’re a Sweet Pickles-loving plebe or a fancy Francophile genius, I can guarantee that you, too, will feel an overwhelming sense of wonderment and religious-grade awe as you open the Building Stories box. It’s as though you have unearthed god’s blueprints for humanity or a treasure trove of someone’s very orderly outsider art. This thing, whatever it is, is straight-up super beautiful, and the experience of reading it is like unwrapping birthday presents and choosing your own adventure all at once. It is the joy of reading incarnate, and I don’t think I’ve experienced it so intensely since I was a kid.”

Western Pond Turtles are making a comeback, and these week-old hatchlings at the Oregon Zoo are destined to aid in the species’ recovery.

For more than two decades the Oregon Zoo has been working to restore this species to its historic range, which once extended from Baja California to Puget Sound. As a result, Western Pond Turtle (Actinemys marmorata) numbers are on the rise. This species, which can live up to 70 years, has been profoundly affected by the construction of river dams, invasive plants, predation, and draining of wetlands.

Here’s an awesome mural that is only visible when the wall is wet. The 30ft tall x 45ft wide image is based on Hartford, Connecticut’s historic Charter Oak painting, which was created by Charles DeWolf Brownell in 1857. This water-activated, vanishing version was created by artists Adam Niklewicz and his assistant J.D. Richey on the back of a vacant synagogue in downtown Hartford. It’s part of a a statewide public art program called City Canvas.

So how did these artists create an invisible tree? By cutting an enormous rubber stencil that was mounted on the wall and then sprayed with Rust-Oleum:

“The brick around the tree is weather-treated. The area of the tree drawing is not. When the wall gets wet, the bricks in the tree-drawing area become soaked and dark and the treated bricks do not, causing the image to appear sharply on the wall.”

Oh, and just in case you’re wondering if passersby have to wait for it rain in order to get a look at the tree:

The mural is equipped with two lawn sprinkler systems. There are three heads on the bottom and two hanging from the roof. While a heavy rainstorm mixed with the right wind power and angle could reveal the tree, the sprinklers turn on for about 20 minutes every day at 3pm to insure the image shows clearly. Depending on weather conditions (humidity is a plus), the mural can remain visible from several hours afterwards all the way to the next morning.
